I get emails and asked constantly where I find the furniture or small goods that I refinish or give new life to. The answer is I am constantly looking. I find myself at Saver's, Goodwill and Salvation Army at least once a week. It has turned into an obsession. And it is an obsession that friends and family know about so I am always getting calls "we are getting rid of this" or "we are putting vinyl shutters on the house would you like our old shutters?" And my answer is always yes! Some how when I think I am running out of space I always find some more space.
One of the best places to find items for new projects is Max Sold. It is a national website that has online auctions for estate sales in your area. Things can go for really cheap, like the dining room table I got for $1, or I've seen things sell for mucho denaro. The only catch is that they give you a day and time period that you must go and pick up your items. It's always important to make sure your available that day before you start bidding.
Now, when you go pick up your items the Max Sold employees are not allowed to help you move anything, keep this in mind for later in the story. About a week ago my brother and I went to pick up our auction items and a large "dead mans chest" freezer for my sister. KEEP THIS IN MIND if you are picking up large items they will almost always be either in the basement or upstairs. In this case the freezer was downstairs and had probably been downstairs since the 1950's. They finished the basement around the freezer making it nearly impossible to fit through any of the doors. After about an hour we were ready to give up realizing that we would have to take apart the door and part of the wall in order to get the freezer out the back door.
My brother went to look for some of his items and I was coming back in from the truck when someone runs up from the basement yelling that someone got hurt on the freezer. The Max Sold guy was trying take the hinges off of the freezer, not realizing they were spring loaded.
Our $1 freezer ended up sending someone to the hospital for stitches and we ended up having to dismantle a door frame and part of a wall. Moral of this story be prepared for an experience if/when you buy large items. Hope my sister likes the freezer!
I wish I had taken pictures of the freezer and the basement but we were too frustrated in the moment. So I will leave you with pictures of the table and mirror I got!
