February Silhouette Fabric Challenge– Freezer Paper Stenciled Tote Bags

Fabric Challenge-01.png

It's that time again! Second Monday of the month and time for the Silhouette Challenge! This months theme is fabric. Read until the end and you will find 44 of my blogger friends and their projects for inspiration! Also check out past projects on the Silhouette Challenge Pinterest Board.

Now hearing this months theme was intimidating. I am a crafter but I am not a sewer. It is actually on my list of things to learn but later... Let's say 2015. I have seen so many of my favorite bloggers and crafting friends (Thinking Closet and TitiCrafty) using freezer paper as stencils. So I decided to give it a try with some tote bags I had bought at Joann's on sale.

I thought finding freezer paper would be easy. I am not sure if it is because I live in the North East or because freezer paper is not used as much anymore. I went to three stores and then sent my Dad out to Walmart in the snow to get it. Walmart did have it but it is the largest roll I have ever seen. Which is actually good because I foresee myself using a lot of it! It is an inexpensive way to customize fabric.

Tip: Since freezer paper has a tendency to not rip straight off the roll I use the paper covering for my mat to trace. The less I have to measure the better.

My first print did not go as planned this is when I discovered to print shiny side yp. In order to do this I needed to mirror the image. I did this by selecting all Object > Transform > Flip Horizontally. The shiny side is the iron on adhesive backing that will stick to the fabric.

I used the print settings of Blade 3, Speed 3, and a Thickness of 10.

Unlike vinyl you do not use transfer paper you iron the freezer paper directly to fabric. I used a dry heat and set my iron to cotton, I think the bags cotton?

I picked up craft paint at Joann's and I had the foam brushes. Using the foam brush dab around the edges (be careful not to brush this how the paint can bleed).

Wait until the paint fully dries then pull back. I was very impressed by how easy the freezer paper pulled off.

I love how this came out and will definitely be making more for etsy. Check this one out in Weekend Craft's store. I just order large totes in bulk and can't wait to try out new designs.

Also, take some time to look through the projects below. It's a great source of inspiration for upcoming projects!
