The last few years I have been starting to really get into decorating for Christmas. Last year at the end of the season I got some amazing deer ornaments and a deer figurine on clearance and that propelled the idea of incorporating deer into my holiday decor this year. Today I am going to walk you through how I made this DIY wall mounted faux deer head.
The weekend of black friday I skipped the crowds and went shopping late Sunday night and was still able to get a lot of the sales. I picked up this paper mache deer head at Joann’s. It was on mega sale plus I had an additional 20% off. I couldn’t resist.
What you’ll need
- Paper mache deer head
- Gold Spray Paint
- Wired Ribbon (I used 4inch)
- Velcro
- Wreath
- Salvaged window or a frame
Now I am sure this is inspired by how much fixer upper I watch but I love old salvaged windows and frames. This fall I picked up this old chippy window at a yardsale. In fact the same yard sale that I got this teal dresser at. The glass from the window had been removed which made it perfect for hanging a wreath from it. I hung it up on the wall with two eye hooks. Once it was hung I knew it needed a few touch ups because I noticed some pink residue on it. I want to keep the chippiness and a bit of the dirt so I just dry brushed over the pink with white chalk paint.
Now I love brown craft paper but it just made the deer look unfinished. I grabbed a can of gold metallic spray paint and went to town spraying both the front and the back.
I have always wanted a boxwood wreath but the real ones tend to be expensive. I found one on amazon that was under $25 and I knew I had to have it for my sunporch and it would hang perfectly from the window frame. Using the same ribbon I used on my Buffalo Check Plaid Christmas Tree, I looped the ribbon behind the frame and wreath. Tying a knot that is hidden behind the ribbon.
Now this is the biggest question I had. How do I hang this dang deer? The back is made of paper so you don’t want to put a hole into it because it will make the hole bigger over time. I decided on using velcro on the wall and the back of the deer head. Seems to be working well it has been hanging for almost two weeks now and it gets pretty cold out there.
Overall I think the deer really makes the space and I love that it ties in with the buffalo check christmas tree. Continuing the “wilderness” or “outdoor” theme. I think I will be hanging this deer every year and I might even keep the window frame year round and decorate it for every season.
