So let’s dive into this. I LOVE mercury glass. Ask me 8 years ago what mercury glass was I bet I couldn’t tell you. So where did this love start? I worked for Restoration Hardware for a few years in college (man I wish I had that discount now). One Christmas with RH they had these stunning mercury glass ornaments. I was in love. Since then I try to pick up a piece here and there to add to my home decor but it can get expensive. So I started out on a quest to learn how to make mercury glass so I could add ornaments to my tree that were within my budget.
What You’ll Need
- Glass Ornaments (Which Consumer Crafts was kind enough to send me)
- Metallic Spray Paint
- Vinegar
- Water
- Spray Bottle
- Paper Towels
Take the top off the ornament before spray painting. Now I did this on my back deck and set down a cardboard box so I would not make a mess of my table.
Not pictured here but start out by spray painting the inside or your ornament. Place the nozzle right to the opening and spray into the ornament. Now start to swoosh the paint around inside until the inside of your ornament is covered. You may have to spray a few times into the glass. Once you have sprayed the inside of the ornament it’s time to spray the outside. Lightly spray the ornament with the can about 6-10 inches away from the ornament. Now you don’t have to saturate it.
In your spray bottle you should have a 50% vinegar 50% water solution. Now I only let the spray paint dry about 25-30 seconds before I started to spray the ornament with the vinegar water.
Spray your ornament. You want to see the water beading on your ornament. Let this sit for a minute or two.
After a few minutes use a paper towel to rub the water/vinegar off the glass. Keep buffing this will distress the ornament letting the inside layer shine through. Beware not to buff to hard I may have broke an ornament or two before I found the right pressure.
I love this! Mercury glass can be expensive. I can’t wait to fill my tree with these and it won’t even affect my budget!

Hi! Do you think this would work if I don’t have clear ornaments? I have some old ornaments that I wanted to up cycle and spray painted black. Please advise! Thank you!
Are they plastic or glass? I think they would work on glass ornaments. But I think you would want to add in a metallic with the black to make it look like mercury glass.
