What to consider when shopping for appliances for your kitchen including your stove and microwave.

Choosing the right stove and microwave combination
The perfect kitchen is designed as a place to gather and enjoy delicious food. It is hard to do that without an oven. Right before I was starting the kitchen renovation my oven decided to stop heating to the correct temperatures. I mean it was all over the map either too hot or stone cold. I was lucky enough to work with GE Appliances on finding the right stove and microwave for me.
This being my first home and first real appliance purchase I didn’t even know where to start! I want to walk you guys through the steps and considerations I took when choosing an oven and microwave for my kitchen.
Things to consider when buying an oven
- Gas or Electric?
- Freestanding or wall unit?
- Cabinet Width
- Single or double oven?
- Do you want a convection
Gas or electric? Well that’s easy as much as I love cooking with gas there is no gas line on my street. Freestanding or wall unit? For me the oven and microwave had to fit an existing space since I was not rearranging the footprint of my kitchen or getting new cabinets. One day I hope when I am in my forever home I would love a double wall unit and a range on an island!
How to measure for an oven
- Keep in mind you want your freestanding oven to be flush with your cabinets and level with your countertops.
- Pull out your old oven and measure the width of the opening between the cabinets. For me this was 30″
- Height. Measure from the floor to the tops of the countertops.
- Depth. Measure from the cabinet to the back wall. Do not include the cabinet doors.
Single or double oven? How often do you use your oven or find yourself cooking at different temperatures? Do you love to entertain? Although I live alone I have a revolving door of friends and family that I love nothing more than to cook for. Thanksgiving? Bring it on. It was a fairly easy decision for myself to know a double oven was the best choice for me.
Finish. I am a stainless steel girl. Although I was tempted by the black stainless. I think if I was getting all new appliances and not trying to match my existing I would’ve went with the black stainless.

Drum roll please….
I decided to go with these two appliances because they talked with one another through GE’s Chef Connect. It uses bluetooth technology to pair compatible Chef Connect ranges, hoods, and over-the-range microwaves. When paired the over-the-range microwave clock will sync to the range clock, so you only have to set or change one clock. You can also set the microwave light and/or the vent fan to come on automatically when the range burners are used.
Now my kitchen renovation might just be wrapping up but I have been using these appliances for close to a year. I have to say I could not be more pleased. My favorite features have to be the chef connect. I am starting to love the convection oven and how fast and even it cooks. I am my first of my family to have a double oven and it is always a conversation starter. I use it far more than I thought I would entertaining but also meal prepping for the week. I don’t think I could ever go back to a single oven.
Overall I am so pleased with my decision. Appliance choices can be overwhelming but when you do the research and choose appliances that work with your lifestyle you will make the right decision for you.
