A beautiful plaid Christmas tree with multicolor plaid ribbon and felt garland on the sunporch.

Plaid Christmas Tree

One of my favorite Christmas trees to decorate is my sunporch. This year I decided to go with a plaid Christmas tree. I am embracing more color and red this year. It’s a bit of a change to me but I am loving how it feels more traditional.

My sunporch is the main entrance to my house and also it’s a room full of window so you can see the tree from the street. I love having it set on a timer so when I get home after dark I can see the glow of the tree as I come down the street.

Today I am joining some of my favorite other bloggers in sharing our porches. Make sure you stick until the end to see their beautiful spaces decorated for Christmas. So grab a Christmas margarita and let’s start decorating.

How to decorate a Christmas tree with plaid ribbon

When I first saw this plaid ribbon at Joanns I immediately knew it had to be on one of my trees this year. To know me is to know my love for buffalo check. I mean have you seen my curtains?! Or even my chair in the living room, lol. This ribbon reminded me of buffalo check but just with an additional color. It’s a great modern plaid.

I used just about 1.25 rolls of ribbon to wrap this 6 foot tree. I also left room for additional felt garland between each section of ribbon. It’s important to put your ribbon on before any ornaments. Also to work it at a slight diagonal and your want to snuggle your ribbon into the branches rather than just wrapping the tree. You want it to look a bit more organic.

UNCONVENTIONAL TREE TOPPERS

I don’t usually like the traditional tree toppers you find in the store. In fact I usually try to find something else to repurpose as a tree topper. This star is actually a wall hanging I found at a local antiques shop. I modified it to become a tree topper. Then this year at Michaels I found these coordinating mirrored star ornaments

PUT A BIRD ON IT

Growing up my parents always had two white doves on their Christmas tree and they were connected by a ring they both were carrying with their beaks. To me every tree I have needs a bird or 12. It’s just something that makes me nostalgic for that family tree.

When I recently gave the sunroom a bit of a refresh and bought these chairs. I knew it would be perfect to nestle a Christmas tree in between. I spend a lot of time in this space in the Spring and Summer. We have been lucky enough to have a warm November. Maybe I’ll be able to come out here and curl up with a book in the glow of the Christmas tree.
