I am having so much fun trying out new cocktails each week and this might be my best one yet! A Watermelon Agua Fresca. Agua what?! Well I didn’t even know what an Agua Fresca was until this week. All I knew was that I wanted to use watermelon and the new bottle of tequila I had just picked up. Honestly I had thought I made this drink up until I did some research.

So what is an Agua Fresca? Agua Frescas are typically non alcoholic drinks that are often served by street vendors in Mexico and Central America. Agua Fresca in spanish means fresh water. They are typically made with fruit puree, water and sugar. When I used to work in downtown Boston I would stop almost every day in the train station and get a fresh watermelon juice. I don’t even want to think about how much money I spent on it. Then when I went out to Nantucket I had the most amazing experience at the Juice Bar. A place that serves both juice and ice cream. I ordered their version of a watermelon slammer. It was fresh watermelon juice and ice cream blended together. I still dream about this drink. So to say I like watermelon drinks is an understatement. That being said I knew when I picked up the bottle of tequila I needed to incorporate watermelon in a way that was not a margarita.

I cut up a whole watermelon using about a cup or a cup and a half of cubed watermelon. The watermelon has been so good the past couple weeks as it’s finally locally coming into season. If you want to add something a little extra I was thinking strawberries would make a great addition.

Now for tequila I always go silver. I feel that it’s smoother. Hornitos is usually what I pick up it’s a good mid price range and I love that you can get smaller bottles since tequila isn’t actually something I drink that often.

  1. Yum! I’ve heard of agua frescas but have never tried one. I just cut up a whole bunch of watermelon, and I think I have some tequila… this drink may be happening this weekend 😉

  2. Watermelon is my summer savior. It hydrates me where water doesn’t cut it. Agua frescas is something I miss most about my hometown near El Paso. Especially the horchata! I agree, your best drinky yet!
