Farmers Market sign

Today I am excited to show you guys how I stencil farmhouse style wood signs. Now it seems like these style signs are everywhere right now but they come with a pretty hefty price tags. I want to show you how you can make them at home with some lumber and your Cricut.

Now to make this sign your are going to want to make the wooden base first. For a full tutorial on how to make this click here.

Now that you have your sign base lets design it. Now I used design space. It was so simple the hardest thing was picking out the font. There are two things to note here. Since this sign is fairly large my stencil is longer than the 12×12 mat. The Cricut Explore Air 2 requires a mat for vinyl. So I ordered a 12 x 24 mat to cut on.

Next thing to note is to make rotate your font down the mat since it is going to be longer than 12 inches. Now since you are using this as a stencil you are going to want to drawer a rectangle share around the words. I split Farmer’s and Market into two stencils.

To make a rectangle select insert shape on the left hand side. Click square. Now to make the square rectangle click edit on the right hand side and click on the lock symbol to unlock the square. Now you can make your square into a rectangle. Now you are ready to get cutting. Make sure your dial is turned to vinyl.

Now that your vinyl is cut weed out the letters and excess vinyl. This is a great time to figure out the placement of the letters on the sign.

Now here is the fun part. How do you get the vinyl on the sign. The answer is simple transfer paper. Its basically gridded contact paper that you lay over the vinyl stencil.

Use a scraper or credit card to get the vinyl to fully adhere to the transfer paper.

Slowly peel back the transfer paper and the vinyl from the backer paper.

Now make sure you know where you want to place the vinyl on the sign. I suggest having measuring tape and a pencil handy.

Place the vinyl onto the sign. Use the scraper or credit card again to get all the air bubbles out of the vinyl.

Peel back the transfer paper. Now I do this carefully and slowly. I like to use the low and slow method which means I pull back the paper slowly at a low angle. Watch out for the middle of the letters “a” “e” “o” etc.

Once the transfer paper is removed I like to use the scraper tool again to make sure the vinyl is adhered and no air bubbles.

Using a small detail brush I take the black paint and start to paint the stencil. Now the first coat I like to go lightly.

Let the first coat dry and paint a second coat. Then you are ready to peel back the vinyl. Now I like to keep the background color paint on hand for any touch ups that are needed.

And just like that you have your own DIY Farmhouse Style Sign. Looks like I just picked it up online for $80! There is just something about making it yourself that gives you a sense of pride in your decor.

Sharing is caring!
