An honest review of how Hungryroot holds up for a week of meals and groceries for two. Here’s our honest review of the experience, from convenience, quality, taste and overall experience.

Hungry Root delivery box with groceries on a kitchen counter.

This is a post is sponsored by Hungryroot but all opinions are my own.

This past week we ordered a Hungryroot box full of meals and groceries for the week for two people. This was our first experience with Hungryroot.

Hungryroot is so much more than a meal delivery kit. I was able to add on to my order with essentials for breakfast, snacks, extra meat and vegetables. It was so nice not having to go to the grocery store. In the past when I’ve done boxes like this I still have to do a smaller grocery run.

I have tried a lot of different meal delivery services and this one is in my top 2!

I ordered 6 recipes to make and 9 groceries items for the week for two people. When I went to order I filled out a survey of our likes, dislikes and allergies. I do have a tree nut allergy and I was very impressed by how that was treated while ordering. An additional indicator popped up over every recipe to make me aware if it contained my allergen.

You could also sort through the recipes by what’s in season, most popular, protein packed pastas there were tons of categories. The amount of recipes available were impressive. I originally thought I was going to order 4 meals and I ended up ordering 6 because there were just so many different options I wanted to try.

What’s In the Box?

What we ordered

  • Taverna-Style Beef Tips + Smashed Potatoes
  • Honey Dijon Roast Pork + Harvest Veggies
  • Honey Mustard Pork Chop + Red Potatoes
  • Crispy Prosciutto + Asparagus Tagliatelle
  • Carnitas + Avocado Harvest Bowl
  • Blackened Pork Chop Power Bowl

Additional Add ons

  • Genoa Salami + Fontina Snack Pack
  • Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups
  • Dark Chocolate Pot de Crème 2 Pack
  • Organic Three Bean Veggie Chili
  • Cucumber Corn Black Bean Salad
  • Creamy Gouda Rounds 6 Pack
  • Organic Everything Bagels
  • Organic Cultured Garlic + Herb Cream Cheese
  • Grass-Fed Sirloin Steak

What was my favorite meal? It was a tie between the Taverna style beef tips with smashed potatoes and the crispy prosciutto and asparagus tagliatelle. The Alfredo sauce was one of the best Alfredo sauces I’ve had at home. It was made with fresh cream, gruyere and shallots.

What was our favorite grocery items? The creamy round gouda and the salami snack pack were great to bring to work and I loved the everything bagels for an easy breakfast. My favorite had to be the peanut butter cups (I have a sweet tooth).

Three items that were a part of the meal that I would order again just as groceries was the Alfredo sauce, honey mustard dressing and the feta cucumber tzatziki.

Product Sourcing

I did appreciate that all the products seemed to be of great quality from the produce to the meat and selection of some prepared foods like the three bean chili and cucumber corn salad.

Hungryroot has something called root standard where their team sources nutritious, tasty options made with whole, trusted ingredients, are quick to prepare, and taste great. I also liked that the ingredients are free of;

  • Free of partially hydrogenated oils.
  • Free of artificial sweeteners.
  • Free of high-fructose corn syrup.
  • Free of artificial colors.
  • Free of artificial preservatives.

Easy Hungryroot Meals

I chose an array of different meals and groceries. The meals I chose were both dinners and quick lunches. I loved that you could have the option of cooking the whole meal from scratch or some of the meats that would normally take longer came pre cooked like the carnitas and the Kalua pork.

I was skeptical about how these would be and they were both excellent. We made one for a quick lunch and one for a quick weeknight dinner. It didn’t feel like a lot of effort at all.

I did learn a few new techniques when making these meals. For instance I had never made crispy prosciutto on the stove top only ever in the air fryer. I also learned how to make smashed potatoes. That recipe is going to be on repeat every week even if I don’t order a Hungryroot box.

Honest Hungryroot Review

Overall I was very impressed by Hungryroot. I loved that I could choose a delivery date that worked for us and meals that suited our busy schedules. The quality of the ingredients were great and there were a ton of meal options for picky eaters.

I would definitely order Hungryroot again. It’s a great option when life is a little bit crazy or when I am coming home from a trip and just want everything delivered to me.

Now there weren’t too many cons to ordering Hungryroot. One thing I didn’t love was all the packaging. Most could be recycled but I do think the single use plastics could be less.

If I was to do anything differently I might order 4-5 meals instead of 6. If anything comes up during the week and you had to skip a meal you just want to keep in mind expiration dates.

But overall this has been one of my favorite services I’ve tried and I will definitely be ordering again!
