While my style is typically eclectic leaning towards shabby chic my Christmas decor is usually rustic. There is just something about plaids, reds, golds and burlap. Did I mention wood? Today I am sharing how to make a DIY rustic Christmas trees made from sticks. Now make sure you stick around to the end of this post I have a treat for you 30+ bloggers have joined together to share how we are getting our home ready for the holidays this week.

I recently had some work done at my house which included removing a tree. I managed to grab some wood slices and some branches for my holiday projects.

What you’ll need

Now this piece of wood was left over from my bathroom renovation. It was actually part of my house and I love that it was a bit beaten up. Now I am going to get bit sentimental on you. This is my first Christmas in my house so I want to go all out with my decorations but I love the idea of using a piece of the house in my decor.

To keep the character of the wood I decided to use a color stain from Deco Art. I painted on two light coats of the Fern stain letting the wood dry in between coats.

While the stain was drying I started to cut the branches. Now I worked from the bottom of the Christmas tree up, measuring the first cut slightly smaller than the width of the board. On each cut use the branch that you cut prior as a template and cut the next stick slightly smaller.

Next to the saw, a safe distance, start to assemble your tree and see it take shape. Be very careful with the saw as your branches get shorter.  As my branches got shorter I choose to go thinner with the branch. Remember to cut a small but wide piece for the stump.

Once the stain is dry it’s time to assemble! Grab your glue gun. Now I chose to use a high temp glue gun since the branches are a bit rough and heavy. Now again I started from the bottom branch and worked my way up making sure I left room for the topper and the stump.

Now the topper was the hardest part about this whole project! I had no idea what to use as the “star.” This craft felt rustic and upcycled and I wanted the star to also feel that way. I would have loved to have found a boot spur or a spigot head. But it isn’t yard sale season anymore and the thrift store turned up nothing! So at Thanksgiving when I popped the top of a beer I knew a bottle cap would be perfect!
