Apple turnovers are so simple yet so delicious. I like to make these homemade treats with store bought puff pastry. This is a great recipe to make in the Fall after apple picking.

I grew up eating Pepperidge Farm apple turnovers. My mom would make the frozen apple or the raspberry turnovers as a treat after dinner. We would usually eat one for dessert and save on for breakfast. I have such childhood nostalgia for turnovers.

In 7th grade I learned how to make an apple turnover in home mec class. I’ve been making them this same way since for over twenty years.

Apple Turnover Ingredients

  • Puff Pastry- Pre packaged sheets of puff pastry can be found in the frozen dessert section. I will usually thaw this in the fridge overnight.
  • Apples- I like to use honey crisp but golden delicious or granny smith apples work well.
  • Butter- Unsalted Butter.
  • Spices- I like to use cinnamon and nutmeg. You could also use pumpkin pie spices.
  • Sugar– Both white granulated sugar and light brown sugar.
  • Flour– Thickening agent for the apple filling.
  • Egg– A large egg for an egg wash to help seal the puff pastry.

List of full ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

How To Make Apple Turnovers

  1. Preheat oven to 400ºF. Place puff pastry on lightly floured surface or pastry mat. Trim each sheet of puff pastry into a square.
  2. Cut each sheet into 4 equal squares.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of apple filling over half of the square leaving a 1/2 inch border.
  4. Beat one egg. Brush egg wash on the edge of the puff pastry. Fold over the puff pastry making a triangle. Use a fork to crimp the edges.
  5. Place turnovers on a parchment paper or silicone mat lined baking sheet. With a sharp knife cut two small slits into the tops of the turnover.
  6. Bake at 400ºF for 20-25 minutes. Bake until golden brown. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack.
  7. While cooling make the icing. Whisk together confectioner’s sugar (powdered sugar) , milk and vanilla. I like to use a fork and drizzle the icing over the turnover.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Filling– Canned apple pie filling can be used you may need to chop up the apples a bit. You can also use a strawberry or raspberry preserve.

You can also skip the icing and just eat warm turnovers. That’s actually my favorite way to eat these baked turnovers. You can also add a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

How to store apple turnover

Store in an airtight container for 2-3 days at room temperature. Store in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. Want to reheat them? Pop them in the oven or air fryer for a few minutes until they are heated throughly.

Why are my turnovers soggy?

If the middle of your turnover is soggy then your puff pastry is underbaked.
