Crock Pot Baked Beans Ingredients
- Kidney Beans, Pinto Beans and Great Northern Beans- I like to use three different kinds of canned beans. Using canned beans makes this recipe easy rather than soaking dry beans for hours. Missing one of the beans? Just swap it out for another can kidney, pinto or northern beans.
- Bacon- Cook up 6 slices of bacon and then chop it. Maple bacon is my favorite. Bacon can also be optional for a vegetarian baked bean recipe.
- Onion- Dice one yellow onion or sweet onion.
- Brown Sugar- Dark brown sugar is my favorite to use for flavor and color. But light brown sugar works as well. (I used it here because I was out of dark brown sugar). The brown sugar adds a great sweetness.
- Ketchup- Adds a great tanginess to balance the sweetness of the brown sugar. BBQ sauce can also be substituted.
- Vinegar- White vinegar, white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar work great in this recipe. Vinegar helps give a brightness of flavor to the beans and breaks down some of the sugar.
- Water- Adding water helps everything come together and cook evenly.
- Yellow Mustard- Adds a great tart and tangy flavor to help balance the sweetness of the beans. Dijon mustard also works well.
- Chili Powder- Adds a slight kick and depth of flavor.
