Let’s make green bean casserole a classic thanksgiving side dish, but made in your crockpot to free up valuable oven space during the holiday cooking season!
Is it even a holiday dinner without green bean casserole? I love a good casserole on my holiday table, but find it hard to compete for oven space whether I’m cooking the meal or bringing a dish to a celebration. When I found out that I could make a homemade green bean casserole in the crockpot and free up space in my oven I was sold.
I’ve been making it this way for years and this slow cooker green bean casserole turns out just like the classic recipe. It’s a delicious side dish perfect for a special occasion and is sure to become a holiday favorite.
Most people have fond memories of their favorite green bean casserole from Thanksgiving dinners or holiday celebrations. Whenever I’m asked to bring a dish to a holiday dinner this is my go to recipe along with this broccoli casserole.
There is nothing worse than showing up with a dish that you made to contribute to the table, only to find that there is no room in the oven to cook or to heat it up, and I hate adding an extra layer of stress onto the host. This is a perfect classic green bean casserole recipe that travels well, heats up by simply plugging in the crockpot and won’t impose on the host or have to fight for oven space.
Great to serve along with my air fryer turkey breast, or top round roast.

Crockpot Green Bean Casserole Ingredients
- Green Beans – I like to use fresh beans, but it also works great with frozen or canned
- Cream of Mushroom Soup – this canned soup is a classic ingredient in most casseroles. If you don’t like mushroom you can easily substitute for cream of chicken soup
- Milk – I prefer whole milk or heavy cream, but any milk will work
- Seasonings – the standard salt & black pepper, but you can add others to taste such as garlic powder, onion powder or a dash of Worcestershire sauce
- Crispy onions – found in any grocery store, these crispy fried onions provide the necessary crunch on the top of the casserole
How To Make Crockpot Green Bean Casserole
- In a medium dish, mix together cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt and pepper until well combined into a creamy sauce.
- Place your fresh green beans in the insert bowl of your crockpot.
- Pour the sauce over the green beans and mix. Cook on high for 3-4 hours or low for 6 hours.
- For best results during the last hour add the crispy onions on top so that they will remain crunchy. When finished cooking switch the crockpot to the warm setting to maintain a perfect temperature for serving.
How to Store and Reheat Crockpot Green Bean Casserole
- Let the casserole cool to room temperature and store leftovers in an airtight container.
- Leftover green bean casserole will last 3-4 days in the refrigerator.
- Leftovers are best reheated in your oven. Bake in an oven-safe dish at 350ºF until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F, which should take about 20 minutes.
Substitutions & Variations
This recipe works just as well with frozen green beans or canned green beans. If you are substituting for fresh, use 2 lbs of frozen green beans or 3 cans of drained green beans.
